OMG, The best latte ever. Their coffee has a less bitterness and whole milk was so good. The combination goes perfectly with my laid back vacation day. They close early on Sunday.

3.5* rounding up Place has class. Excellent espresso drinks at prices comparable or less than the chains in town. Built into a remodeled old cabin with a warm, wooden interior adorned with local art. Bring cash for purchases under $5 Internet is slow though - att uverse (200kbps to 2 Mbps).

Very cozy and friendly place. Yes, they provide free wifi. Customers seem to be mostly locals that know each other.

Our favorite place for coffee and wraps in Tahoe! Prices are really good and it's a really cozy place, ideal for an hour of relaxation!

My go to spot for coffee in South Lake. I always get a Weiss Mocha. It's my favorite. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. I like to sit outside and relax.

Loved this place, good coffee, friendly service, very rustic inerior, power for your notebooks, wifi is very decent speeds even with full house. kept going back every morning while visiting.

Amazing coffee! I ordered a blended Mocha Shake. It was delicious and it was topped with real whipped cream.

  • Michelle H.

I spent an entire day here (internet hookup!) and it was peaceful and the people (employees and customers) were some of the nicest people ever. My coffee tasted like coffee, not bitter but rich. I hate when you order a flavored latte and it tastes like microwaved ice cream. The employees were kind, but didn't spend the whole time trying to talk to me so I really got a lot of work done. And you can't beat the ambiance.....cozy little cabin turned into the sweetest little coffeehouse. I'll be back......probably tomorrow!

Visiting from Austin Texas where cool and quaint coffee shops are the norm, and Alpina Cafe feels like home. Warm and family run, a small cozy spot with a warm fire, Internet access and kid-friendly feel. Great find near Emerald Bay.

This coffee shop fulfills my requirements; must be able to stay for a considerable time without being harassed, serve strong full bodied coffee, outlets for charging and free wifi. I saw a lady working on her knitting project. Baristas are fast and able to multitask. My favorite is the breakfast sandwich with ham, egg n cheese on a croissant. They also have almond milk, a real plus for me ;)

Nice place to stop by for s coffee. In addition to coffee and pasteurized there are: -Plenty of space to sit in - Free Wi Fi - Some computers - Children books and games What more you need?

Excellent service and are willing to accommodate personal needs. Plus the also have the options of almond, coconut and soy milks!! Yes! My son got a peach, pear, apple and strawberry smoothie that was divine. Just what we needed after our hike. Thank you!

Great find in South Lake Tahoe! Stopped in to grab breakfast on the go, friendly staff & great atmosphere. They also have free wifi. Got two bagels, two scones, coffee and a mocha. Bagels were soft and delicious, scones were amazingly good-light and fluffy with a fantastic flavor (blueberry/raspberry). Coffee and mocha were both solid too. Total bill was $15, not bad for Tahoe.

Delicious coffee and espresso, with fresh food! I got a croissant sandwich and it was perfect! The staff was so friendly. "I came a customer and left a friend!" I highly recommend.

I recently was vacationing in Lake Tahoe with my family and upon recommendation from a local, tried this quaint little coffee shop. What a treat! I am a true coffee lover and like something different than the Starbucks crap. The shop itself is so cozy..seems like a great place to relax. Seems to be full of locals. I asked the clerk for a recommendation on a drink and decided upon a Caramello. Delicious! I also tried a chocolate crossaint and some bagels, and they were great as well. Fair prices..less than corporate Starbucks. I enjoyed the coffee so much that we decided to drop by for a thermos fill up the next morning before we hit the road to go home. This time I got some type of Organic Lake Tahoe blend (don't remember the exact name) and it too was great! Only $2 for a full up. Keep up the great work and I look forward to visiting again the next time we visit!!

This place is great! I had one of the best lattes of my life and the person I went with said she has never had a better iced mocha either. They use coffee ice cubes for the iced mocha, which is a fantastic touch. The atmosphere is adorable, with a real Tahoe cozy cabin feel. Very friendly staff. I highly recommend stopping into Alpina Cofee! It's right off the freeway too, so it's very convenient.

I love this place! More of a local coffee house. Great breakfast sandwiches and great coffee. The girl that works there is nice and always does a good job on orders. Highly recommended.

  • Sarah T.

I've been here twice now. Both times I've ordered the ice coffee. I need to branch out-- maybe next time. The best thing about the iced coffee are the coffee ice cubes. After they give you your cup with ice cubes it's a serve yourself deal. Lids aren't in an obvious location. The first time I got coffee I expected the lids to be by the cream and sugar. If you're like me and can't find them just ask. Refills are 1.00. It's small inside but there is lots of space to sit outside. A couple of picnic benches and some other seats.

Such a great coffee place. Visited here multiple times on this summer's Tahoe visit. Delish latte's... nice lite food... coffees by the pound... good ambiance... terrific service... wifi... patio seating... I would go here every day if I lived nearby. As it stands, I'll just have to visit next time in the area. I don't have a single non-positive thing to say about this place.

  • Tresa B.

Cute cafe baaad coffee. I ordered a mocha with almond milk, took two sips and realized it was horribly burnt. It bothers me to pay $4.50 for a crappy cup of coffee so I told the guy who made it that it was burnt and asked for him to make another. The second mocha was not only burnt but had chunks of powder in it....... worse than the first one.... I just took it and left. If he cant make it right the first two times he most likely cant make a good cup at all... My time and money was wasted but now I know not to ever go back!

Good egg and cheese bagel for 4 bucks. Also good chai, they have oregon, black (which is a little spicier than oregon, and green). This place has cute indoor seating and some outdoor seating also in a little garden in the front. Very close location to the keys and also very peaceful.

My husband starting bringing me to this coffee shop every time we visited from NC about 6 years ago. It's by far one of my favorite spots in town! The coffee is always excellent, full of flavor and perfectly brewed (we are coffee snobs). I love the cozy fire and lodge feel..love love love.

    (5)
  • Winnie F.

Terrific service and vibe! Love the indoor/outdoor seating options. Nice selection of coffees including cold brewed option. Visited multiple times during our trip and all the staff were friendly and efficient.

This is my family's local spot, best place to get coffee in the mornings. Always a friendly face and good people here!

Very friendly. Excellent coffee. The cup of organic Guatemalan I am drinking today is positively floral. Nice croissant sandwiches

Stopped by this local coffee establishment before departing from our amazing trip to Lake Tahoe. It turned out to be the perfect finish to the weekend. The atmosphere is very warm with plenty of seating (and wireless internet access) and the coffee was pretty good. They also haf a nice selection of light breakfast items. I wish I would have found this spot earlier on the trip...but I will have something to look forward to next time.

Stopped here to do some work/reading/writing. Good coffee, nice staff of folks and a mellow atmosphere. It did not disappoint! Free wifi with no password. Not too big, not too small, just right.

This is my coffee house of choice in Tahoe.. Great coffee, nice place to meet a friend. love the payment box. Need just a regular coffee?? Just put your money in the box and you are good to go... no waiting in line. so quick and convenient.

Alpina is my go-to cafe whenever I'm visiting Lake Tahoe to work on the next book in my Beanie and Cruiser Mystery Series. I even feature a similar cafe in the series, which is also my main character's favorite. I love the rustic alpine cabin decor and always feel right at home. It's my Tahoe afternoon writer's retreat, and they don't make you feel rushed to vacate your table, as some places do, especially when you're working at a computer. They provide plenty of plug-ins and free WiFi, too. A sixth star goes to sweet Shireen, South Lake Tahoe's #1 barista. She always goes out of her way to make me feel welcome whenever I come there and knows what tea I like to drink. She brews it ahead when she knows I'm coming. Alpina Coffee Cafe is where it's at for me when at my favorite destination, Tahoe. beanieandcruiser.com

Chill atmosphere, cozy fireplace, lots of seating/tables, friendly staff, good drinks and snacks.

    (5)
  • Thor S.

Nice staff, small yet cozy area to sit with wood stove. Difficult to get a seat however. Many typical coffee/laptop loungers sitting and surfing for hours... (Doesn't work so well with a small area) I wouldn't recommend this for groups of 4 or more merely due to seating alone. Food/snacks were meh...

Such a cute place! The food selection was great and they had a great variety of milk options to choose from. Great little find and super friendly staff

  • Kayvaan G.

Great, local cafe with excellent coffee and a mellow, homey vibe. They make EXCELLENT espresso drinks and I don't know how they get their foam so good, but it's good. Nice selection of coffee beans. Only minus is the food items in the case are kind of mediocre. They could stand some better baked goods. I was just over at the Camp Richardson Coffee & Confectionery and they had some amazing local muffins - so I know there are better local sources.

  • Tina J.

Super disappointed in the house coffee. I'm not an espresso person, I like my coffee hot and fresh, sadly the cup I got there ended up being a very bad choice. I don't mind the whole serve yourself coffee, especially since I'm pretty picky about the amount of cream I do like in my coffee. However the coffee was extremely hot but tasted like it had been made hours before hand and just left on a burner to keep it hot. If you are trying to stand out as an amazing local coffee shop I'd recommend changing your coffee at the very most every 45 minutes. I love the cute style of this place, but without the coffee tasting awesome, all this place is, is a cute building. I'll pass, sorry.

  • John S.

My 2 lattes were delivered half full of foam. Shop was busy so I left the cups there & walked out. When I called later to tell why, I was asked if I still wanted. I said not half full of foam. Their reply was a cheery "OK". A coffee shop should know a latte is not half foam. I lost $8 & they lost opportunity to deliver good customer service. To say the least I'm not happy with this establishment. OWNER take note!

We go camping at Camp Shelly a couple times each summer. We always make Alpina our early breakfast stop on the last day so it makes breaking down camp easier without adding breakfast prep/clean up to the mix. The staff is friendly, the drinks are terrific, food is delish and the atmosphere is cozy. Outdoor seating is beautiful and rustic. They have Wi-Fi here and I was actually able to get 3G coverage as well. I usually get the ham/cheese croissant which is ginormous and reasonably priced. Our daughter got one as well and she LOOOOOVES their hot apple cider! This recent visit (Monday, 6-20-11) my husband was elated that they had poppy seed bagels - his favorite. Usually I get a vanilla latte, but this time I tried the Lucretia... a mocha with cinnamon and nutmeg. Yum-o-Rama! Alpina takes the sting out of leaving one of earth's most splendid treasures.

    (4)
  • Adam W.

Well...it was drinkable, the atmosphere was nice and the service was great. Based on the quality of the coffee alone however, I'd recommend just going to the Peet's down the road however.

  • Joe S.

So Alpina apparently has some new owners, and I stopped in to scope it out. All I really wanted (other than to check the place out) was an espresso macchiato. The coffee experience was better than I've ever had there before...although they still use Alpen Sierra coffee (mediocre at best), the barista was well trained and made it correctly and with some skill. That said, I was a little disappointed in that it seems like the exact same place...no new improvements or changes that I could see. Still no meaningful food choices (why not?), still kinda sleepy (as opposed to happenin'), and the computers for customer use still suck (software in need of some TLC, as always). Where's the energy that new owners should bring? I dunno if I'll be back...

  • Mansi A.

Super cute little cafe that has the ambiance of a quaint lodge. Alpina was just a block of two from the hotel that we were staying that, so an ideal place for us to grab some coffee and breakfast. I ordered the Mexican hot chocolate and a toasted everything bagel with lite cream cheese. You can't really god wrong with that order, but it was just a nice ambiance to enjoy it in on a cold, wintery day. The service was very prompt, and friendly. They had a variety of other food selections including eggs, croissant sandwiches, wraps, and some pastry items. Definitely a cafe worth visiting, if you're looking for a cute ambiance and a simple breakfast.

  • Tara T.

One star based on the message sent to me after my previous review by Erika, who is listed as an employee of Alpina. Excerpt: "I would ... like to apologize for your tea. We brew our tea at 190 degrees which I understand can be too hot for some types of tea leafs. If you decide to visit us again, please let the cashier know that you would like your tea made with water that doesn't come from our coffee brewer. We have a hot water pot that contains water that is cooler than 190 degrees and shouldn't burn tea." If I go to a restaurant, I expect them to not burn my food beyond recognition. It is not my responsibility as a customer to tell them how to cook food properly. The same applies to tea. If you (Alpina / Erika / whoever) are going to carry loose leaf tea leaves (and notice the plural of "leaf" is "leaves", not "leafs"!) you need to teach your employees how to steep them and what temperature water to use. I'm not your mother (but if I were, I'd be wondering where I went wrong), I'm a paying customer. And if you can't get your shiznit together and learn how to properly steep a damn cup of tea? Go to tea bags. There are some highly decent ones out there (Numi, Mighty Leaf...) and you won't offend the Tea Gods or the Almighty Yelping Wombat by murdering what would otherwise be a perfectly good cup of tea.

They make pretty good coffee, but wish they had better breakfast sandwiches. Otherwise a nice little place to stop by and enjoy a cup of coffee.

This location is away from the hustle and bustle. This place exudes the old Tahoe charm. There is indoor and outdoor seating, plenty of parking too. Great service and friendly employees. Great barista, the vanilla caramel latte was the best I've ever had. I hear they double cup the iced coffee's so they don't get watered down-never heard of that, but very nice idea. The coffee cake was a little too cold, but still tasty, and I'm sure they would heat it up if I asked. We tried a slice of quiche, and it smelled and tasted very good. My daughter tried a honey pastry that looked like a cinnamon roll. It was enough for 2 people to share and very delicious. I wish I could have one right now. They are open until 5 pm for a few more weeks until things quiet down at the lake. This is such a plus, as we saw the open sign the night before but had read on Yelp that they closed at 3 pm. I often enjoy a cup of coffee at 4 pm, so this was great! The outdoor seating area is attractive. Inside is a nice wood stove that must be great in the winter time. We returned and bought a lemon smoothy that tasted nice and lemony. My daughter described it like lemon merangue pie. I highly recommend this coffee shop/cafe and would return over and over if I lived nearby. The only downside is the bathroom is past the kitchen, a little odd, but given the age of the building, it's understandable.

I have been a frequent customer and make it a point on each trip to SLT to come to Alpina for my coffee. I love their coffee selection and knowing its roasted local it makes it even better.

  • Andrea K.

Nice little cafe, where we had a little breakfast, just bagels and coffee. The staff was very nice and friendly, we had a little talk. The seati g outside is wonderful.

This is my go-to place for a cup of coffee whenever I'm in South Lake Tahoe (I live in the Bay Area but am here several times a year). Their wifi is a godsend, and their coffee is delicious. I also think the interior is cute and comfortable. Keep up the good work!

    (5)
  • Matthew M.

Spacious coffee shop with plenty of seating including outdoor tables in the summer. Coffee is good and consistent. I like that they have a honesty box so I can get my coffee quick in the mornings and not have to wait. My partner likes their iced coffee with the coffee cubes.

    (4)
  • Daniel E.

Great coffee - plus outdoor seating and picnic benches. And big windows for enjoying the scenery on cold days.

    (5)
  • Jess S.

Horrible service, the two customers who came in after me received both of their coffees before I received mine. Then the young brunette sneezed while making my drink. And handed me a cup full of foam. Not only was it full of foam and sneezed on but it was the wrong drink! I will NEVER come back. And as a local Im bummed because this used to be my favorite alternative to Starbucks.

    (1)
  • Nathaniel M.

They get the star. The wireless and guest computers are great and handy. Somehow, their Soy Hazelnut Latte (My fave coffee bev) seems to be one of the best I have ever had. Maybe it is because it is so much colder there than Santa Cruz, no matter it is good. Note in the service: they are friendly and I think my previous review shows how busy they are and nothing more. They get in a speed mode that sacrifices small talk. No worries. Thanks Alpina for taking my Soy Haze to a new level!

    (4)
  • Blue R.

nothing wrong with this place that I could see (and I don't want to piss off the ghost, so it's getting 5 stars.) yes, check out the web site and read all about the fun-loving ghost who apparently keeps the staff hopping, sweeping & wiping. despite the extra chores doled out by the SLT spectre, you'll get your delicious mug of roasted goodness in a reasonable amount of time. tree stumps and a few actual chairs provide outdoor seating for you and your doggie, while inside you can enjoy free wifi and even use one of the free laptops they have available for customers. pick up your Keep Tahoe Blue stickers here (for $1 donation) or down the road a little ways at the Keep Tahoe Blue Store. keeptahoeblue.org/store/… (the photos I added were taken from their web site. just thought they'd help you find the place.) enjoy!

  • Jeff G.

Best iced coffee around. The secret? Coffee ice cubes!! My only complaint with this place is often we try to stop by in the afternoon and can't make it in before they close. Oh well, just have to get their sooner.

  • sephi k.

Great coffee shop, it's way more quiet than Starbucks (no annoying music) and I like Alpen Sierra coffee brand--they serve organic coffee as well, which is great. Coffee shop is very cozy, with nice seating options, and outdoor table for nice weather.

    (5)
  • Jenny Q.

We stopped here on a way to our hike. It was perfect cause I realized with a purchase we got free use of their laptops (they have two) and internet. As I have no cell phone or laptop it was great to check my email while I was passing through. It's small, but they have indoor and outdoor seating. The people coming in and out seemed to like the place. I had a wonderful soy chai latte and my husband had a double shot of espresso. They also have free wifi. There were some yummy looking wraps and large croissant sandwiches in the deli counter and i noticed they have a large selection of loose teas as well. My only complaint would be the teens working the counter were not really friendly, but they were not rude either. They were OK, I suppose that's all they can afford really. But the atmosphere was nice, clean and relaxing.

    (4)
  • Jennifer L.

Been going here off and on for years. I just went the other day and got a regular cup of coffee. I was like looking around for a while and then I had to ask where the coffee condiments were. The girl kind of made me feel dumb, but really the coffee was on the counter where you pay and then on the other side of the building was the little coffee bar area. Why oh why are the two so very far apart? I don't get it. All around, great coffee, and a lovely atmosphere. Support local business!

    (4)
  • Khalid N.

Everything a coffee place should be. Young, hippies working the espresso machines. Great cider and cappuccino. Good prices. The computers for use are a nice bonus (in addition to the standard wifi in most coffee shops).

    (5)
  • Katelyn P.

Great place, I have to stop here every time I'm in South Lake. The blended drinks are DELICIOUS!

    (5)
  • Jenn G.

Another locally owned coffee house in a funky (some say haunted) cabin. It features Alpen Sierra coffee (and they keep a few selections on hand for you to take with you), pastries from Don the Baker, and lunch selections including wraps and quiches. As others have mentioned it's got free wi-fi as well. That's not why I like it though. Alpina, unlike many of the coffee houses here, has an actual garden and outdoor seating area that is not in a parking lot, and is surrounded by plants and trees. That may not seem novel in an area that's so close to nature, but it is. It's lacking the 5th star because I've learned that if I want a bagel in the morning I need to be there before 8 am because the stock is so low, and I can't imagine what's left for the folks that trickle in any later.

    (4)
  • Kari J.

This is the worst most over priced coffee that I can ever recall having. I would rather get gas station coffee next time. The little building and the space have potential but the coffee was outrageously priced and quite undrinkable. I threw my latte out after trying to choke down a few sips.

    (1)
  • Leila T.

Great little gem in South Lake near Emerald Bay. Lots of vegetarian options, too (ordered the veg wrap with sprouts). Coffee is quite good and they even give you the option of coffee ice cubes (wow!). Free wifi/computer usage which I used to do a little mapquesting.

    (5)
  • Tim M.

Solid little coffee shop. Mostly locals and people trying to get some work done. Plenty of outlets, free wifi, decent coffee, and a little fire. Not sure why they have a full kitchen and yet no real food. Might have stayed for lunch otherwise.

  • Lizzie P.

I always have high hopes for local coffee shops. When visiting S.Tahoe we went in for a cup of joe. I was totally disappointed. The prices were as high as the Starbucks down the street and their coffee was weak and not as hot as it should have been in the 30 degree weather outside. The staff was friendly, but a little pretentious for my liking. They were very vegan friendly and had tons of vegan edible items I didn't get a chance to try, but they looked yummy. We ended up leaving this very cute small victorian-home-turned- coffee-house, and grabbing a cup of coffee from Peets down the street which was wonderful.

best coffee in South Lake Tahoe! Coffee from all around the world. Great staff and free wifi!

  • Yna D.

A terrific place to get coffee and croissant sandwich for breakfast. We've been coming here for years to get breakfast while on vacation at south Tahoe but no "ghost" sighting yet. The desktop computers for customers use is very helpful for those who want to check their e-mails while out on the road. On good weather days , it's good to sit out in the garden, there is a fireplace indoor on cold days.

  • Antone J.

Great local coffeehouse. Good espresso drinks, free wi-fi (and they even have PCs if you didn't come equipped with a laptop), nice wood furniture, friendly staff -- what's not to like? Oh yeah, to top it all off, a ghost! Conveniently located right off the Y, which is great if you're staying in the Keys. Two small parking lots in back.

    (5)
  • Andrew D.

Hmm I don't like that all their food is pre-prepared (as far as I could tell) but this makes it quick... and ICE COFFEE with COFFEE-based Ice Cubes?! yes that's impressive

    (4)
  • Sadia J.

I love this adorable little coffee shop! It's so quintessential Tahoe - cute little building, great coffee and food and tons of locals hanging out all the time talking, having book groups, typing away on their laptops, etc. People clearly feel very comfortable just hanging out and it's the type of establishment that's totally cool with that. I myself have worked from this coffee shop for many hours and it's great. F-you starbucks, yay cute mom-and-pop coffee shops!

  • Laura J.

I confess that coffee is not my thing but their large variety of teas keeps me going back for more! Their baked goods & and salads are very fresh and yummy.

Plenty to choose on the menu; endless wi-fi, smart attractive help, eclectic clientele, plenty of parking, near a print-shop; what's not to like abt this place?

  • Nick P.

Charming coffee shop in an old cabin. The employees were incredibly nice (and a little stoned I think). Good chai and quiche.

  • Anthony C.

Good alternative to Star$s down the street. Free wifi. Low key local vibe. Decent brew.

    (4)
  • Karen J.

I love Alpina -- yummy coffee, friendly staff, wi-fi, very nice atmosphere (as Jenn G. said, the outdoor garden is a big plus). If I were to take off any points, it would be that it lacks a comfy upholstered couch -- but I guess that only stops me from hanging out for an unneeded third cup.

    (5)
  • Kevvy K.

Agree with everything else said, but minus points for storing coffee in thermoses. There is a lot of coffee turnover, but still, reduces the coffee quality too much for me. (Though of course, nowhere near as bad as airport coffee.)

I love this place... great food, coffee and relaxed and friendly atmosphere (and locally owned and operated!!) :)

  • Victoria M.

If I owned a coffee place it would be like this one. I've been going here for over 3 years now and I am never once disappointed and always happy with their consistently great coffee. I always buy a couple a pounds of something they have - usually the special of the month, and it's always smooth and full of flavor. They also offer sandwiches and breakfast snacks which I've tried a couple of times. They're tasty but definately NOT fat free - lots a cheese and heavy bread. Great if you gotta grab something hearty and go to the slopes or hiking. They have free wireless for customers, and two PC's that you can use if you didn't bring your own. And the plus for me is they offer soy milk right next to the regular milk and cream coffee condiments! Decent sized inside seating with fireplace. However it's starting to become more and more populated with wireless junkie "campers" sitting for hours and hours (according to the sociable, honest but nice staff). And as bonus the weekend after the BIG fire they had a local lady who makes t-shirts design a fundraising t-shirt "Locals for Locals" helping the fire victims. They sold out by noon on the first morning. I ordered 4 and they shipped them to me. I love this place! Oh and they allegedly have a ghost too - read it on the web site.
